Eye surgery procedures on Long Island

Anesthesiology on Long Island, NY

Island Eye Surgicenter is home to an exceptional Department of Anesthesia staffed with experienced physician anesthesiologists who specialize in providing eye care patients with the highest standard of anesthesia care available. In fact, each Island Eye anesthesiologist is trained in the most current and specific techniques of ophthalmic anesthesia to allow for maximum patient safety and comfort. Our Anesthesia doctors are among the most experienced on Long Island at providing eye anesthesia.

Prior to eye surgery, each patient meets with their designated Island Eye anesthesiologist for a comprehensive evaluation of their health, medical history and allergies. This meeting also provides Island Eye Surgicenter patients with an opportunity to address all of their questions and/or concerns in regards to their anesthesia. After the evaluation, a small intravenous is placed in the patient’s arm for easy administration of any necessary medications.

Island Eye offers several types of anesthesia: sedation, local anesthesia and regional block anesthesia. Often, these techniques are combined in what is known as “local anesthesia with sedation” or “Regional Anesthesia with Sedation”. To reduce the possibility of complications and side effects, Island Eye does not provide general anesthesia. Our anesthesia team strongly believes that the right dosage of sedation with local or regional anesthesia leads to the shortest recovery time and a high level of patient safety, patient satisfaction and patient comfort during and after surgery. Although patients are often free to choose which type of anesthesia they will receive, our anesthesiologists in conjunction with your surgeon will help you decide which type is best for you. Topical anesthesia is applied to the treatment area prior to the procedure and is continuously used during your procedure for maximum comfort during surgery.

Nerve block anesthesia, on the other hand, is administered via an injection just before surgery. You will not be aware of these injections, as sedation is used to make you comfortable for the short period needed to complete this procedure. Nerve block anesthesia is stronger than topical anesthesia, and patients can expect to be numb for one to two hours following surgery. After surgery, a patch is frequently placed over the treatment area, which can be removed once the anesthetic wears off.

The staff of the Island Eye Surgicenter Anesthesia Department is committed to maximum patient safety and pain-free surgical procedures. Our patients can rest assured that they are in good hands and will be provided with the highest standard of ophthalmic anesthesia care available today.

In addition to talking with our anesthesiologists, you may wish to discuss your anesthesia options with your eye surgeon. Of course, if you have questions about your anesthesia, we encourage you to call, and one of our nurses will be happy to speak to you.
